Firewood For Home

For my fireplace needs on Saturday 10/11/08 I collected some more firewood from Chris and Tami's place in Aloha, Oregon. I forgot my camera, so I used my cellphone camera.

Tools Ready

Tools at the ready.

Sharpening Chain

Touch-up sharpening- two strokes per tooth.

Filing Depth Gauges

Doing the depth gauges. Many people don't know how this works- the gauges have to be 0.025 in below the tips of the cutters in order to cut the chips!

Wood On Ground

The Douglas firs I cut were dead and leaning at low angles. When I cut them loose the bigger one lay on the ground. I cut partway through along the length until I got to a place with a gap below where I could get the saw underneath without rocking it. Then I rolled the half-cut sections to where I could finish the job. Those are some half-cut sections.

Two Wheelbarrow

That's after two wheelbarrow-fuls. There is some bigleaf maple mixed in. I think the rest of the load was Douglas-fir.

Final Load

On my way home I went to the bank machine, ate a mint-oreo Bizzard at Dairy Queen, checked the oil in the truck, and then filled the truck with gas. The gas gauge is unreliable so it is a lot safer to fill and write down the mileage.

Wood At Home

At home I got my regular (obsolete) camera out and recorded the haul. That's one middle age yours truly, with about four hours, a $10 chainsaw, free wheelbarrow, and my wife's truck plus a couple of gallons of gas. I think I did pretty well.
